Why Timely Renewal Matters
Driving with an expired license is not just risky—it’s illegal. Under Malaysian law, operating a vehicle without a valid driving license can lead to hefty fines, demerit points, or worse, disqualification. Renewing on time ensures you’re always covered in case of an accident and keeps your road privileges intact.
When to Renew Your Driving License
In Malaysia, you can renew your Competent Driving License (CDL) up to 12 months before the expiry date. Most drivers choose to renew it for 1, 2, 3 or 5 years depending on preference and budget.
TIP: Set a reminder 1 month before expiry to avoid last-minute hassle!
Documents Required for Renewal
Before heading online or visiting a counter, make sure you have:
- Original MyKad or MyPR card
- Existing driving license
- Passport-sized photo (for in-person applications only)
- Payment (depending on the validity period chosen)
For online renewals, digital verification is done using your MyKad or JPJ profile—no need to re-upload a photo if JPJ already has your current image.

In-Person Renewal
If you prefer the traditional way, head to:
- JPJ branches
- Pos Malaysia outlets
- Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs)
Bring along your IC, old license, and a passport photo (some outlets may offer instant photo services).
What if Your License is Long Expired?
If your license expired:
- Less than 3 years ago: You can renew it as usual.
- More than 3 years ago: You’ll need to re-sit and pass the driving test.
This includes the KPP01 (theory) and KPP03 (practical) modules, as your driving competency is considered outdated under JPJ rules.
